Strong, distinct and resistant, there’s no wonder gold is highly sought after for the making of fine jewellery. It’s strength is ideal since it is the most malleable of all precious metals and resistant to corrosion and rusting. Mixing it with other metals, makes it more resilient.
Gold is measured in Karatage (Karats). The smaller the number, the less gold there is in the mixture. It is usually a matter of colour preference since the purer the metal composition, the more yellow the colour is. The term Karat comes from carob seeds, which were used to balance gold measuring scales.
Gold is very soft in it’s purest form, so it is not often used to craft jewellery. 18K gold is the most popular purity used in the making of fine jewellery, due to it’s rich, deep colour balance and strength. At Liang & Rudolf, we exclusively use 18K gold, which is 75% gold alloyed with other metals to make it stronger and wearable.
An element so widely spoken of, Gold can be found in mobile phones, food and even astronaut helmets. The majority of the world’s gold is still used in jewellery and it is very rare in spite of being popularly used.
Gold purity is measured using Karats.
Karats | gold percentage | Other Metal percentage |
---|---|---|
24kt | gold 100.00% | other metal 0.000% |
22kt | gold 91.60% | other metal 8.4% |
18kt | gold 75.00% | other metal 25% |
14kt | gold 58.5% | other metal 41.500% |
10kt | gold 41.7% | other metal 58.300% |
6kt | gold 25% | other metal 75% |
Most pearls found on the market are all cultured as it is very rare to find them in their natural habitat. There is no system of grading for pearls but their quality is determined by their lustre, shape and surface markings.
At Liang & Rudolf, we hand select the highest quality of pearls in the rarest shape, which are round.
At a glance, all pearls appear to be white but they will have an undertone colour which are usually cream, pink, silver, white, yellow or black. These are only noticed when light is reflected off the pearl surface.
When pearls are cultivated, a bead is placed inside the oyster. The oyster then gradually coats the bead in layers called ‘nacre,’ which are composed of calcium carbonate. The larger the pearl, the more visible nacre is.
The different types of pearls are Akoya, Freshwater, South Sea and Taitian. These differences are from their provenance, oyster type and farming method. Currently all Liang & Rudolf jewellery are created using the finest Akoya Pearls. Akoya Pearls are the original Japanese cultured pearls. They are the same pearls you would find on your grandmother’s necklace. They are the original and still one of the best pearls available. We use exclusively genuine Akoya Pearls from the most experienced farms in Japan.

Liang & Rudolf jewellery exclusively uses 18K gold due to its ideal purity for the creation of fine jewellery.
The number “750” on our jewellery is the hallmark that indicates the purity of our gold. In this case “750” means 750/1000 gold or commonly referred to as 18K (Karat).
Gold is a natural element that is best preserved by cleaning with warm water and mild soap regularly, using a soft bristled toothbrush. To maintain the delicate radiance of gold, we recommend that you do not let harsh chemicals such as cleaning detergents or chlorine touch your jewellery.
Currently all Liang & Rudolf jewellery are created using exclusively the finest Akoya Pearls.
All our jewellery uses only the top 1% of pearls.
We hand select each pearl to ensure that it meets our highest standard with the following qualities: Very high lustre; flawless to extremely slightly spotted surface; round and symmetrical in shape to the naked eye; and white in color with rose or silver overtones.
Akoya Pearls are the original Japanese cultured pearls. They are the same pearls you would find on your grandmother’s necklace. They are the original and still one of the best pearls available. We use exclusively genuine Akoya Pearls from the most experienced farms in Japan.
Since pearls are born out of nature and therefore very sensitive to temperature and the environment, we recommend that you take your jewellery off before showering in order to preserve their lustre.
Before storing them at the end of the day, gently wiping them with a soft lintfree cloth will sustain their quality.
